Brent
Palmer
Brent’s passion
for being a mentor to youth began with a tragic
turning point in his life. When he was 13 years old
his mentor, his father, died suddenly in a work
related accident. Without this anchor in his life
Brent floated into a sea of hopelessness and
despair. If it wasn’t for a counselor that cared
about him, he would have continued on a path of fear
and ended up dead or in an institution. He didn’t
realize it then but this counselor’s compassion and
commitment saved his life.
Several years
later Brent was wondering what his calling in life
was, and he realized that he wanted to be a mentor
like his counselor was to him. He had just recently
had his first child and decided to quit his job and
go to school full time and stay at home with his
daughter while his wife worked to support them. When
he had his second child a couple years later, he
knew he had to get a summer job to help make ends
meet. He applied for summer teen staff position at
the Boys & Girls Clubs of South Valley in Salt Lake
City, Utah in June of 2004. After his interview,
they offered him the position of Teen Director.
Brent continued to go to school full time, raise his
two beautiful daughters and work at the club for the
next two years. During this time his family grew
with the birth of his first son.
In the spring of
2006, an opportunity opened up for his wife to
relocate with her company to the northwest. So they
decided to move after Brent graduated in May with
his BS degree in Psychology. When they arrived in
Auburn, Brent immediately started looking for a Club
so that he could continue in his passion for working
with youth. He found a new home with the Boys &
Girls Clubs of South Puget Sound as a Program
Director at the East Side Branch in July of 2006.
